GLOOMHAVEN DIGITAL is a turn based tactical-RPG based strategy game based on the original work of Isaac Childres in Cephalofair Games’ world renown GLOOMHAVEN board game.
Working on this title has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in my career. Gloomhaven is a vastly complex game of strategy and tactical planning, driven by a compelling and changing narrative that had to be translated to a digital setting where users expect streamlined and focused information (apart from fun and excitement from a well crafted game).
The challenge was to give players all the tools they need to play without bombarding them with all the overwhelming information that comes with the rules. Compartmentalising, pacing and useful tooltips were key to delivering an experience that doesn’t feel overwhelming and saturated beneath the UI.
One of my main tasks on this project was to create the overlaid UI that encompassed everything from the party manager, deck builder, shops, narrative quest flow to the in-game combat related UI such as health & damage displays, status effects, results panels, etc.
The character portraits in the party manager, the world map and narrative art were beautifully rendered by PETER LUMBY and the awesome Ability Card design was created by JENNY BREWER.
